The president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, had an announcement for all those already filling the airwaves with talks of 2015: Stop distracting me because I’m busy being president.
Jonathan said that he is presently preoccupied with serious governance and would not want talks of an election which is still three years away, to take away his focus.
“Politics will not put food on the table of the people. It is governance that will. Let us focus on governance,” he said.
His warning is particularly necessary following the sudden uptick in endorsements for his candidacy for 2015. The most recent endorsement was that of the South-South Peoples Assembly led by Chief Edwin Clark. Clark gathered about three dozen leaders of South-South extraction in a hotel in Delta State, where they openly pledged support for the Jonathan 2015 project.
But speaking yesterday in Lagos, the president said that his major focus now is to keep his promises to Nigerians, something they are already witnessing especially with the improvements in the power sector.
He spoke through his Senior Special Adviser on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Mr. Oronto Douglas, during the media presentation of a book entitled’ Sure and Steady Transformation.’
The book is a special publication by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Research, Documentation and Strategy. Oronto Douglas said that the book was only the first volume in a serialised publication.
The 155-page volume highlights the progress report of the ministries while the second volume “which would follow shortly, will highlight the achievements of the agencies and parastatals.”
In all, the president’s team listed achievements of the administration in 30 ministries, while the last section of the publication dealt with ‘Building Strong Institutions.’
Mindful of the power of images, the publication was splashed with dozens of pictures showing the president and his cabinet at work.
The entire publication can be downloaded here.
