The Federal Government has renamed the
prestigious University of Lagos, Moshood Abiola University, President
Goodluck Jonathan announced this morning Tuesday, May 29, 2012.
Jonathan who delivered a presidential
speech at 8am to mark the May 29 democracy day said the Federal
Executive Council’s decision to rename the tertiary institution located
in the nation’s former capital was to honour and immortalize the late
politician Moshood Abiola who won the annulled June 12, 1993 election.
Abiola died in government’s custody on July 7, 1998.
In related news, reports say students of
the university are not happy with the name change and they have
‘rejected it’, with some who are currently on campus gathering and
taking to the school gate to stage a protest.
Eye witnesses say that students are chanting anti-government slogans, with the university’s Director of Student Affairs, Professor Olukayode Amund, begging the students and calling for caution.
The school recently lost its Vice Chancellor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe.
