Editor of Saturday Independent Newspaper, and one time Senior correspondent at Punch Newspaper, Olumide Iyanda, was robbed by bandits on Monday, May 28, 2012, a few miles away from Alapere Police Station, Ketu, Lagos.
Narrating his encounter, Iyanda wrote on his Facebook page ‘My
wife and I were attacked by robbers numbering at least 7, about 200
metres from the Alapere Police Station early yesterday morning. They
were magnanimous enough to let us leave with our lives and car. We were
however divested of our phones, driver’s licence, my FRSC Special
Marshall ID card, money, ATM cards, wedding rings, watches and some
classic CDs. I was savagely bitten in the finger as one of them made to
remove my ring with his teeth‘.
He further said, ‘We saw an (RRS)
Rapid Response Squad van parked less than 100 metres on our side of the
road and it faced us directly as we drove off. I could not think of the
police as my friend then, so we did not stop to make any report‘.
The editor, who later went to make a
complaint, said he was shocked when the police said they knew the gang
involved. In his own words, ‘We returned to Alapere Police Station
some hours later, and an officer casually told us ‘those bamboo boys
must be back on the road. He was referring to robbers who have become
legendary along the road between Ogudu and the old Ojota toll gate. He
also advised that we get a police report as cover, in case the bandits
drop any of our documents at a crime scene, not because of any hope of
getting back the stolen items‘.
Iyanda said the police have opened a
case file, while the officer in charge told them to call him if they
needed a police report. However, ‘He did not say anything about
contacting us if they get any lead. I do not expect to hear from the
police anymore in respect of the robbery. But they shall be hearing from
me‘.
Earlier this month, an external columnist with the Punch Newspaper, Shina Oyetayo, was kidnapped and robbed by unknown gunmen.
