– Nnamdi Kanu was denied bail today
– The judge reasoned that because of Kanu’s dual passport, he could escape justice
A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
At his ruling on Friday, January 29, the judge over the case, John Tsoho said that as submitted by the respondent, the fact that Kanu has two passports – Nigerian and British – indicates the possibility of his escaping trial.
He also said that the charge against the defendant is serious and bears grave punishment which may warrant jumping bail by Kanu.
Tsoho also added that the State Security Services (SSS) has indicated that Kanu is a threat to the national security.
He further said that the constitution stipulates that the security of the nation supersedes the right of any individual.
Tsoho thereby ordered an accelerated hearing of the matter.
“An accelerated hearing is thereby ordered on a day to day basis,” Tsoho said.
He also ordered that Kanu be remanded in Kuje prison custody throughout his trial period.
The case was also adjourned to February 9, 10, 11, 12 for commencement of trial.
On exiting the courtroom, Kanu who smiled all through the ruling was picked by some SSS officials dressed in black.
The officials overshadowed the prison officials who had earlier brought him.
