Veteran musician turned politician Onyeka Onwenu says although she enjoyed a very good relationship with Juju Icon King Sunny Ade, she never had an affair with him.
Onwenu’s duets with KSA ‘Wait for me’ and ‘Choices’
were major hits of the nineties, riding on heavily rotated videos that
soon began to fuel gossip that the two were dating. The video for ‘Wait for me’, a song preaching abstinence, showing KSA and a much younger Onwenu acting as lovers, especially helped fan the flames.
‘Sunny was enjoying the rumours. I did not. It got to a time that I had to call him’, she said, while fielding questions from Tee A during the recording of a new season of Tymeout with Tee A.
‘But I’m happy the project made a
huge impact. We don’t have to base everything we do on sleeping around.
The beauty of a woman is that she can hold herself together, until the
right time. Young men, you are not bush if you’re not sleeping around.
Hold yourself, there’s time for everything’
Commenting on the quality of most of
today’s lyrics, Onwenu condemned ‘dirty lyrics, advising young musicians
to ‘sing songs that life people up’.
‘You can sing love songs without
being dirty. Iyogogo was a love song. We don’t have to do dirty lyrics.
We should use music to sing about issues. I sang about saying no to sex
‘if you love me you go wait for me’
Onyeka Onwenu was one of the numerous
