According to rumors circulating in the entertainment industry, HKN general Davido is partly responsible for the fall-out between May-D & Square Records.
The 19-year old popstar financed the production of the video of May-D’s star-hit Ile Ijo, a move that supposedly made him lose face in the eyes of CEO of Square Records Jude “Engees” Okoye. The video was directed by Clarence Peters, and featured appearances from friends of both May-D and Davido, and also dancer Kaffy, but none of the Square Records members.
The young duo have been friends for a while and Davido is rumored to have wanted May-D to sign for HKN ever since he released his premiere hit track, “Soundtrack”.
May-D on his own part was also not happy with Square Records, angered over the fact that the label had not provided him the apartment, car, money and other items under the terms of agreement. The singer was often embarassed that Davido and his other friends had to come to pick him up from his family house in Magodo whenever they were going for parties and concerts.
After his split from Square Records, May-D didn’t join HKN though, but moved on to start his own label, Confam Entertainment.
