For lovers of Nollywood movies, Yemi Solade needs little or no introduction. That’s because the distinguished actor has come a long way and has pleased several souls in Nigeria with his acting skills.
Known for movies like Iriri Mi (2008), Madam Dearest (2005), Pasito Deinde and Tunde Kelani‘s award-winning film, Thunderbolt, Yemi Solade clocked 56 yesterday, January 31, 2016.
In celebration of the talented role interpreter, who doesn’t look his age, we bring you 13 facts you probably didn’t know about him…
- Yemi Solade was born in Lagos on January 31, 1960
- Bred in Lagos, Yemi had his elementary and post elementary education in Surulere. He went to St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School and Birch Freeman Secondary school, both in Surulere.
- He did A’ levels in the U.K. at Tyhill College in Coventry and later headed for OSCAS, Oyo State College of Arts and Science to prepare for University. It was there he met Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu, who is also an alumnus of OAU.
- Yemi was a disco dancer before going to study Dramatic Arts at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
- His first experience as an actor was a 45 minutes monologue on stage in Ife. The play was tiled Crazy Youngie and it saw him play the passenger, driver, conductor in an imaginary bus.
- After his University education, he went into academics. He did his NYSC at the University of Maiduguri and the Ramat Polytechnic, where he taught General Studies, Communications Skills and Literature.
- He later moved over to Kaduna Polytechnic and taught Literature and Communication Skills.
- He has three masters degree. He did a Master’s in Public Administration, another master’s from the University of Leicester in Sociology and then another in OAU which is called Masters for non Social Scientists.
- He left his lecturing job to focus on theatre after experiencing riots twice in northern Nigeria. His house was burnt once and he returned to salvage the situation when the coast was clear. When he discovered that the MKO elections were approaching, he had to run home because of the imminent troubles that might accompany it.
- Yemi’s mum hails from Akwa Ibom.
- His half-caste charming wife, Hannah, whom he met at the set of Super Story, is a native of Cross River.
- Yemi’s present marriage is his third. His first marriage was to a Shuwa Arab lady in the north. He pulled out of the union over claims that the lady’s parents wanted to Islamize him. His second marriage was just two years old before it crashed.
- Yemi and Hannah are blessed with two lovely kids, Rola and Fela.
