Three Naval ratings have been reportedly killed in a shootout with notorious pipeline vandalsoperating in the Arepo/Ikorodu creeks in the early hours of Friday. The latest incident it was gathered was fallout of the attack by the security personnel stationed to protect the Pipelines in the area on Wednesday morning, when the vandals were accosted and shot at leading to the boat with which the stolen fuel was being conveyed exploding.
The vandals escaped with minor injuries. This, allegedly, enraged the vandals who regrouped with miscreants from Ikorodu and Shagamu. “The boys went to the place and immediately the security operatives sighted them, they opened fire on them but, the boys who are very familiar with the creek waited for them to exhaust their rounds before retaliating. Three of them were killed and their body was taken away, “ he added. Residents of Beach Land Estate Arepo corroborated the story saying that they heard gun shots around 11:00 pm and lasted almost through out the night. According to Mrs Hussein Shittu, “ I was about going to bed when I started hearing the gun shots and I believed it was the security men protecting the pipelines. Around 2:00 am we were woken up by the Military men that there is a fire raging from the creek which I later found out was the result of the exchange of gun fires between them and the vandals.
“This thing started on Wednesday morning about 8:00am in the morning when we heard a loud explosion and we saw fire on the water, which I learnt it was the boat of vandals destroyed by the military. “My neighbor later told me that some men of the military were killed and their body is still missing, we are living in constant fear as I know this won’t be the end of their frequent clash, we hope the government will be able to do something about this, we can hardly sleep with our two eyes closed, “ she lamented. Another resident Mr. Segun Ojo alleged that the shoot out between the vandals and the security operatives arose from disagreement on their cut from the proceeds of the siphoned fuel.
“ When this military men came around November the illegal bunkering stopped, but some weeks later we learnt the vandals have commenced their activities after meeting and agreeing on a sharing formula between them and the security operatives. “But those men have been changed and the new sets have not agreed on the percentage of their settlement that was why they were attacked on Wednesday when they went to siphon fuel,” he alleged
