Nigeria’s Mikel Obi has lost in the race for the African Player of the Month for January in the English Premier League as Ghana’s Jordan Ayew defeated him to clinch the honour.
The Aston Villa star beat off competition from Mikel and Cheikhou Kouyate of West Ham to win the award.
The award which is organised by New African Soccer is a monthly program which rewards deserving African footballers.
According to Tunde Adelakun the awards director, Ayew has put in a lot of effort in his team’s matched in recent games.
‘Jordan Ayew has really put in a good shift in the games that Aston Villa played in the month of January, and although they are really struggling to get results as a club, one cannot but notice and appreciate the desire and ability shown by the youngster in the course of the month.’
