After so much animosity and antipathy, Skales will finally be releasing an album and it is titled Man Of The Year. The rapper’s career has been filled with several ups and downs, meme, public scrutiny and more but now is the time he has to put everything to bed in one body of work.
The 23 year old rapper still has a lot of time on his hand to peak (if he hasn’t), most rappers peak at 27 – like footballers.
With the album to drop May 18th under highly courageous record label, Baseline Music we look at 5 reasons why Skales’ album is important to him and Nigerian music at large.
Prove EME is wrong to drop him
Skales is on the way to proving EME is wrong (to drop him) but he hasn’t done it completely.
The Kaduna-born rapper released a monster hit track titled “Shake Body,” last year but since then he seem to have returned to his old self. Not really old as he is still getting shows. EME must be closely monitoring how Skales evolve from Shake Body stage and they won’t be hurt by the situation of things, afterall, Skales recorded a hit song under their label as well, “Mukulu” although not as viral.
One of his most recent release, Je Kan Mo is a hit property but one way or the other the song hasn’t had the same effect as its predecessor.
Skales’ album has to push through, he has to release a solid album to prove to EME… Y’all wrong.
Prove he is not a one hit wonder
Nigerian music has seen more one hit wonders than any other industry in Africa.
Skales risks joining the high list of artists if his album doesn’t produce another chart topping record, he knows this so we expect him to cook another hit or two for his first album after 4 years in the industry.
From May 18th, the country will be watching and listening, including his former friends at EME.
Prove Rap-Singing can be successful in Nigeria
Skales faces the prospect of being Nigeria’s Drake. Sounds bogus but true.
Who is the biggest rapper-singer doing it in America? Drake. Who is the biggest rapper-singer doing it in Nigeria? Nobody.
Rappers like Ice Prince, M.I have tried their hands on singing in the past but none have been able to stick with it longterm, Banky W is inconsistent with it and rather unserious. The boy Skales has been doing it since the beginning of his career and in the biggest hit of his career yet he sang. On “Emergency” by Wizzypro, he proved he can do well when he comes to rapping.
Hitherto, Skales hasn’t recorded any hit rap song, this need be done on his album and his rating will go even higher
Prove Wizkid Wrong
Skales and Wizkid were both involved in a major Twitter battle earlier in the year. Wizkid said a lot to Skales that he couldn’t give a proper responce to because odds doesn’t back him.
A recall of Wizkid’s words at Skales…
Success is the best revenge. Skales needs to respond to all these by releasing a very solid studio album.
A solid album means a change in industry status for Skales
More than anything, if Skales can put out a very solid album, it means one thing. He has the opportunity to change his grading from B to A or C to B maybe even D to C if his Man Of The Year album moves the shelf.
Rappers like Phyno and Ice Prince shot to prominence with solid debut albums after several good and bad singles. We put Skales into the category of both rappers prior to their debut albums.
Skales has Shake Body, Ice Prince had Oleku, Phyno has Ghost Mode, Ice Prince and Phyno however had 5 other solid songs off their project that put them in our faces. In order to achieve the change of fortunes the two have enjoyed, Skales knows what to do – Release a very good debut album
