– President Buhari addressed the European Union Parliament plenary session today

– He hailed ex-president Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat

– Restates commitment to rescuing missing Chibok girls and reuniting them with parents

President Muhammadu Buhari has yet again hailed the efforts of his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, to ensure Nigeria remains a peaceful nation after conceding defeat in the last presidential election.

Speaking today Wednesday, February 3, 2016, during the European Union parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, France, President Buhari noted that Jonathan made history by conceding defeat after the March 28 election.

Addressing the plenary, the retired army General noted that Jonathan did what no Nigerian leader had ever done since in the history of the country.

He said: “Democracy has come to Nigeria to stay, sooner than we expected, Nigeria will be regarded as one of the strongest in Africa,” adding that strife may arise in the process, but it is not beyond what can be contained.

Speaking on the drama of the last presidential election, where Elder Godsday Orubebe created a scene at the collation centre, Buhari averred that the maturity which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials led by Professor Attahiru Jega displayed helped Nigeria avert a major crisis.

President Buhari who noted that Nigeria’s problems are poverty, disease and technological backwardness, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the missing Chibok secondary school girls are returned and reunited with their parents.

“The government will not rest until the girls are rescued alive and reunited to their parents,” Buhari noted.

“We have reorganised the Nigerian Armed Forces and repositioned them to deal decisively with the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states local government areas where the insurgents once dominated have been gradually recaptured,” President Buhari added, adding that the activities of Boko Haram have been restricted to Sambisa Forest.

Speaking also on the need for the European Union to support Nigeria in its recent crisis, the Nigerian president said: “Nigeria is facing the challenges of oil-theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta as well as recovery of illicit funds. In this regard, Nigeria solicits the cooperation of the European Parliament to support the efforts aimed at stemming these vices.

“Our attempt to restore security, curb corruption and fight crime will result not only in improving social stability in Nigeria but will re-open the doors for full economic relations with Europe and the rest of the world.

“Those who wish to invest in our country have immense opportunities and we intend to guarantee the security of people and investments brought to Nigeria.”

In a related development, Festus Ogun, a young Nigerian lawyer and blogger, says the President Buhari-led government could improve on some of its strategies to finally and ultimately wipe out Boko Haram, not technically but in actuality.

The erstwhile administration has tried its best in combating the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram, to soil level but all “efforts” were in futility.
