ALBUM REVIEW: KCee Is Not Ready To Takeover

KCEE-Take-Over-Jacket-front
KCEE doesn’t attempt to make his album more than what it is. Takeover doesn’t pretend to be a grand artistic statement nor does it aim for something higher. KCEE has produced an album filled with easy to digest pop songs. There is no mystery to them.
Album- Takeover
Artiste- KCee
Guest Appearances- Wizkid, Flavour, D’Banj, Davido, Don Jazzy, Timaya, Mr. Songz, Skiibii, Phyno
Producers- Black Jersey, Del B, Jo Pee, Soso Sobrekon
Record Label- Five Star Music (2013)
Duration- 1 Hour, 1 minute
He isn’t the greatest of singers but KCEE has a team that yields results for him. With Del B on the boards and Harrysong ghostwriting, the ex-KC Presh singer dropped his first hit ‘Limpopo’. The insanely addictive song took everyone by surprise and stormed the charts. KCEE has stuck to this formula on his debut.
The album starts off with ‘Hustle Your Way’ (kind of how KCEE  got to the top of the music charts). Just like many other tracks on the album ‘Hustle Your Way’ is an imitation of Igbo gospel tracks which a lot of singers from the East have started using on pop songs. It is a sure crossover formula. The track ‘Ogadinma’ uses this formula too with a twist of storytelling. “Life is not a rice and beans take it gently, softly softly babe” sings KCee on the song. This is the kind of writing you should expect when listening to the album.
‘Hakuna Matata’ is a throwaway pop track. Songs like this are all over the project which draws it back. Because they are so generic you get the feeling you’ve heard these songs before. ‘Do It’ featuring Timaya is one of them. There is so much you can sing about a woman’s body before it gets corny and tiring. ‘Ifeneme’ is a boring take on a woman’s physical assets. ‘Totori’ has a straight up cheesy hook which you should expect from a singer of KCEE’s qualities.
The album is entirely downhill. But there are some pleasant surprises. ‘Emmah’ featuring D’Banj is one of them. Produced by Del B ‘Emmah’ is the kind of song that Nigerians would love to lose their minds to on the dance floor. ‘Had It Been I Known’ is a timely detour from the predictable sound on ‘Take Over’. KCEE tries his hands on Reggae as he delivers a love song that is refreshing to listen to. It’s back to business on ‘Ajibole’, an Afrobeat influenced track about a woman who stole KCEE’s ‘heart and gold’. While the subject matter isn’t new territory for the artiste, the instrumental, construction gives the song a nice a boost. The vocals of the featured artiste Skiibii (who sounds like Wande Coal) helps the song greatly.
‘Adaugo’ featuring Mr. Songz is one of the songs that makes KCEE’s album listenable. The song would go well as a soundtrack for Nollywood love movies.
Sadly the good times don’t last long on KCEE’s album. ‘Chineke Di Mma’- is an album filler. ‘Vitamin C’ featuring Phyno sounds cheesy but it is something that should hit home with the millions of trashy pop lovers in Nigeria. Don Jazzy doesn’t add anything to the remix of #Pull Over’. The original version is one of those songs you hate to love because you know it is going to be an inescapable hit.
From the production to guest artistes on his album KCEE is ready to take over the dance scene in Nigeria. Unfortunately with his shortcomings he isn’t going to take over music in Nigeria. He is just going to be that guy whose songs we are going to dance to until the next hot artiste arrives.
